Oligospermia, Asthenozoospermia and Teratozoospermia Explained

Understand the common semen report terms for low count, low motility and abnormal morphology.

Primary keyword: oligospermia
Secondary keywords: low sperm motility

Definitions

Oligospermia means low sperm count. Asthenozoospermia means reduced sperm motility. Teratozoospermia means a higher proportion of abnormally shaped sperm.

Causes

These findings may be linked with varicocele, infections, hormones, obesity, diabetes, smoking, toxins, heat exposure, fever or genetic factors.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the pattern and cause. Some men need lifestyle and medical correction, while others may need fertility specialist coordination.

Why interpretation matters

A semen report should be interpreted as a whole, not from one number alone. Couple fertility depends on both partners and timing.
