What Does Azoospermia Mean?

Azoospermia means no sperm seen in semen, but the cause and treatment plan can vary widely.

Diagnosis

Azoospermia should be confirmed properly, often with repeat semen analysis and centrifuged sample review. One report should not create panic without confirmation.

Obstructive azoospermia

In obstructive azoospermia, sperm production may be present but the passage is blocked. Causes can include infections, surgery, congenital absence of ducts or reproductive tract obstruction.

Non-obstructive azoospermia

In non-obstructive azoospermia, sperm production itself is reduced or absent. Hormones, genetics, testicular history and examination guide evaluation.

Treatment direction

Treatment may involve hormonal care, surgical evaluation, assisted reproduction planning or counselling depending on the exact diagnosis and couple goals.
